Our cataract surgeon, Dr. Miller, performs cataract surgery at the Colorado Outpatient Eye Surgery Center in Denver. Cataract surgery with Dr. Miller is comfortable, convenient and the entire process usually only takes a few hours of your time.
The Cataract Surgery Procedure
The procedure begins with the dilation of your pupil. Your eye is then treated with an anesthetic so that you will feel little to nothing. For most patients, this means a few sets of eye drops in your eyes. Only in rare instances is it necessary to use needles or injections. Next, your cataract surgeon will place a very small incision at the outermost edge of your cornea. This incision is just large enough to allow a microscopic instrument to pass through it.
Upon passing the tip of the instrument through the tiny incision, the instrument then makes sound waves. As a result, the sound waves gently break the cataract into small pieces. Those pieces are then washed away and removed from your eye. A new Intraocular Lens Implant (IOL) is then inserted into your eye through the same incision that was used to remove your cataract.
After the Procedure
A staff member will accompany you to a comfortable place so you can relax after your procedure. After resting, a staff member will give you permission to have a family member or friend drive you home. Dr. Miller will see you at The Eye Center within 24 hours of your surgery so they can confirm you are healing as planned. He will also prescribe you eye drops and ask that you wear a protective shield, mainly at night, so you do not accidentally rub your eye. Although each patient will heal a little bit differently, the majority of patients that have cataract surgery with Dr. Miller are able to see well enough to return to their daily activities within a day or so after their surgery.
