Lens Styles
Single Vision
Single vision lenses correct vision at one distance. For example, lenses specifically made for seeing close up, or lenses specifically made for seeing further away. However, if you are in your 40s and your eye doctor finds that you are Presbyopic, a single vision lens may not allow you to have the full range of vision that you need.
Progressive Lenses
Progressive lenses are prescribed for Presbyopic patients who need vision correction for both near distances and far distances. They are also appropriate for those who wish to see at all distances without the distracting lines found in ordinary bifocals or trifocals. At Eye Center Optical we offer Varilux, Physio, as well as Shamir Insight Lenses to ensure easy adaptation and comfort.
Flat Top Bifocals
Lenses that split into two segments are called Flat Top Bifocals. One lens is for seeing at a distance and the other is for seeing up close. They are prescribed for those patients who want the ability to see at both far and near distances without having to remove their eyeglasses.
Executive Bifocals
Executive bifocals are lenses that are split into two segments, but actually have a line extending the entire width of the lens. This type of lens may be useful for patients who need a very wide reading field of vision, however, a wide field of vision may also be obtained with certain Flat Top bifocals.
Trifocals
Trifocal lenses are eyeglass lenses that have three distinct segments. One for seeing far distances, one for seeing intermediate distances, and one for seeing near objects.
Specialty and Occupational
In addition, should you have any special visual needs for work or recreation, such as sports eyewear or computer eyewear, our Opticians will be able to counsel you on many other eyeglass lens styles that are designed specifically for your activities. Please mention your activities to them so they can help you select the best possible lenses for your needs.
Lens Materials
Plastic Lenses
Plastic lenses are lightweight, provide high optical quality, as well as protection from ultraviolet light. However, these lenses are prone to scratching so you will need to clean and care for them properly. They can also can be tinted to almost any color and thus be used for sunglasses as well.
Hi-Index Plastic
High Index Plastic is a premium lens material that is a thinner, lighter weight plastic. This lens provides excellent optical quality, can be lightly tinted to any color, has ultraviolet protection, as well as scratch resistance.
Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate is a premium lens material that is the lightest and most impact resistant available. This lens provides excellent optical quality, thinner style lens, ultraviolet protection, scratch resistance, and can also be tinted to any color.
Glass
Glass is the basic lens material that provides superior optics and scratch resistance. Unfortunately, this lens has a number of limitations such as inferior impact resistance, thickness and heavy weight.
Lens Options
Photochromatic Lenses
Photochromatic Lenses are lenses that adjust their color to outdoor and indoor light conditions, so they darken outdoors and lighten indoors. They are available in gray, brown, as well as green tints. They also provide scratch and ultraviolet protection.
Anti-Reflective Coating
Anti-Reflective Lens Coatings are applied to lenses to reduce glare and enhance visual clarity. These coatings have three main advantages:
- Improving vision for both night and day by reducing bright sunlight during the day, and reducing the glare from oncoming headlights in night time traffic.
- Reducing eye fatigue by eliminating ghost images, making your vision more comfortable.
- Enhancing your appearance by reducing reflections on the lens surface.
The Eye Center Opticians will answer any questions regarding anti-reflection coatings, explain the benefits of each, and help you select the most durable and anti-reflective coatings available.
Polarized Lenses
Polarized Lenses are a special type of sunglass lens that reduces bright sunlight glare as well as produces excellent outdoor contrast. These lenses have less than half the glare of regular tinted lenses and include scratch resistant coating and ultraviolet protection.
Lens Tinting
Offered on many lens materials, Lens Tinting reduces glare from light and enhances your appearance. It also comes in an array of colors.
Mirror Coating
A mirror coating provides extra protection from light glare and gives the lens a mirror-like effect. This coating comes in many colors.
