Custom Wavefront Laser Eye Surgery is a specialized surgery technique that provides patients with more complex prescriptions, as well as the possibility of achieving a more precise visual outcome. Custom Wavefront Laser Eye Surgery procedures, such as Custom LASIK or Custom PRK, help patients achieve their vision goals.
A number of optical components make up your eyes. However, the two main optical components are the Cornea and the Crystalline Lens. As with any optical component, the Cornea and Crystalline Lens may have distortions, otherwise known as aberrations.
About Optical Aberrations
While you may not know it, if you wear glasses or contact lenses, you are familiar with the most common aberrations. These include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Because these aberrations are simple, they are ‘low order’ aberrations. Glasses and contact lenses can easily correct these low order aberrations.
However, there are some optical aberrations that eyeglass or contact lenses cannot correct. These aberrations are probably unfamiliar to most patients, but include terms such as, spherical aberration, coma, and trefoil. Since these aberrations are more complex, they are ‘high order’ aberrations. High order aberrations can not be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. As part of your full assessment, we will use the Wavescan System to measure your current prescription. If we find that you have considerable high order aberrations, or that you might otherwise benefit, we will perform a Custom Wavefront Laser Eye Surgery procedure to achieve the best possible results.
