About Cataracts and Symptoms of Cataracts
The Crystalline Lens is normally flexible and “crystal” clear up until the time we reach our 50’s and 60’s. This provides the transparency and optical clarity required for clear vision. As we progress into our 50’s and 60’s, the normally “crystal” clear lens may gradually become yellow and cloudy. When this occurs, patients begin to experience blurring of their vision, as if they need to change their prescription. As a result, patients may notice it becomes harder to see in dim lighting. Upon further progression, patients may find colors look faded or washed out. Others may observe glare, halos, light sensitivity and a continuing decrease in their vision. If the Crystalline Lens becomes too cloudy, it may cause a significant decrease in both daytime and nighttime vision. These are the typical symptoms of a cloudy Crystalline Lens and for those who have formed a cataract.
Even if you have had perfectly normal vision throughout life, cataracts are a common eye problem as we get older. Cataracts are even more common if you have diabetes or have taken cortisone type drugs for asthma, or other types of inflammatory conditions. If you are over 50 and experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you should be checked for cataracts.
