About Cataracts & Symptoms of Cataracts
The Crystalline Lens is normally quite soft, flexible and “crystal” clear up until the time we reach our 50’s and 60’s. This provides the excellent transparency and optical clarity required for clear vision. As we progress into our 50’s and 60’s, the normally “crystal” clear lens may gradually become yellow and cloudy. When this occurs, patients may begin to experience a mild blurring of their vision, often as if they need a change in eyeglass prescription. As the yellowing and clouding of the Crystalline Lens continues to progress with age, patients may also begin to notice that it is not as easy to see well and comfortably in dim illumination, such as for night driving or even at dusk. With further progression of the yellowing and clouding of the Crystalline Lens some patients may notice that colors look faded or washed out, and yet others also may observe glare, haloes, light sensitivity and a continuing decrease in their vision. If the Crystalline Lens becomes too cloudy it may cause a significant decrease in both daytime and nighttime vision. These are the typical visual symptoms that are common for those patients whose Crystalline Lens has clouded and formed a cataract.
Even if you have had perfectly normal vision throughout life, cataracts are a common eye problem, as we get older. It is important to note that cataracts are even more common if you have had certain health problems such as diabetes or taken certain medications such as cortisone type drugs for asthma or other types of inflammatory conditions.
If you are in your 50’s or 60’s and are experiencing blurry or clouded vision, poor night vision, hales around lights, shadowy vision, light or glare sensitivity or the fading of colors, you should be checked for cataracts.
